Malik Riaz Hussain Bahria Town

Malik Riaz Hussain Awan (Urdu: ملک ریاض حسین‎) (born in Sialkot on February 8, 1954), is a Pakistani business tycoon and founder/chairman of Bahria Town. Bahria Town's net worth was $10 billion USD in 2011[1] Awan was born into a family of modest means, and was often troubled financially. He started working as cleric at the age of 19 and eventually launched his own business, after borrowing a mere Rs 1500.00 (the equivalent of US $ 14.00). Today he is Pakistan's Twelfth Richest Man with over $1 Billion worth of assets.[1][2] He became a contractor during the 1980s.

Controversies

One of the largest controversies surrounding Malik Riaz has to do with his success. It is not known how he went from being an ordinary clerk in Military Engineering Service (MES) to becoming one of the most successful businessmen in Pakistan. Bahria town spans 45,000 acres and, along with its owner, invited many speculations and controversies since the time of its construction during the mid-1990s.[3][4][5] Awan is also a notable social activist.[6]
