Mulana Mufti Mahmud History




Early Life and Education

Maulana Mufti Mahmud an ethnic Marwat Pashtun hailing from Abdul Khel, was born on February 15th, 1919 in Paniala, Dera Ismail Khan District, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, province of Pakistan. He was an Islamic scholar and political activist. He passed his middle examination from middle school Panyala in 1933. He also persued religious education and studied primary Fiqha and Persian book from his father Khalifa Muhammad Sadiq. Soon after the completion of primary education, Mufti Mahmood joined Daarul Uloom Deoband and later on got admitted in Madrassa Shahi, Muradabad in 1936.

He then joined Madrassa Qasimul Uloom as Mufti Scholar in 1950. Mufti sahab was a good player of Volley Ball, Camel riding, and Nishana Bazi.
 
Political Life, Imprisonments and Activities

Mufti sahab was at first arrested by British rule in India Freedom Movement and for the second time in 1953 in Anti Qadiani Movement for 1 year by General Ayub Khan. For the third time he was arrested while opposing General Ayub's One Unit. He was lastly arrested in 1977 during Pakistan National Alliance Movement against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for rigging the general elections. Mufti sahab, during his studied joined Jamiat Ulama e Hind and participated in Uttar Pradesh elections as active worker

Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman is his son and was the leader of opposition in Pakistan. He fought in the Indian Independence Movement during the 1940s. He was a close ally of the Indian National Congress at the time and opposed the demand for Pakistan. Even after the Partition of India, when he moved to Pakistan, he remained a bitter enemy of the Muslim League.

During Martial Law in 1962, after the sad demise of Ahmad Ali Lahori, Maulana Mufti Mahmood became the president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam founded by Moulana Shabir Ahmed Usmani. And into a coalition with the National Awami Party & Pakistan Peoples Party, on March 1, 1972, he was elected as the Chief Minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. He along with his cabinet resigned in protest at the dismissal of the NAP - JUI (F) coalition government in Balochistan on 14 February 1973.

It is pertinent to mention here that after imposition of ban on Political parties, JUI, under the banner of Nizamul Ulama continued its activities. Thereafter JUI, Pakistan held a mammoth conference on 3rd, 4rth, and 5th May, 1968, outside Mochi Gate Lahore. In this meeting the constitution of JUI was appointed and central elections were held.

Mufti Mahmood was instrumental in founding Wafaqul Madaris Pakistan.

He supported Afghan-Jihad against USSR (see also Soviet-Afghan War). He died on 14 October 1980. He was buried in Abdul Khel, Paniala, his home town.

  1. While Moulana Fazlur Rehman is quite different from his father as politician he tried to remain wd parties in power at any cost. ( diesel )
