The deputy convener of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Coordination Committee, Dr Farooq Sattar, said that the peaceful protests against the “prejudiced” statement of Sindh Senior Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq would continue till the bill for the establishment of the Hyderabad University was not passed.
“If the bill for the establishment of the university is not introduced in the Sindh Assembly, the demonstrators will march towards the House and force the so-called politicians, who are sowing the seeds of hatred, to establish the university,” he said while addressing a large gathering at the Karachi Press Club on Sunday.
Dr Sattar said that the bill for the establishment of the Hyderabad University should be passed by the Sindh Assembly if the conspiracies against the division of the province were to be defeated. He said that the MQM would present the bill in the Sindh Assembly if the PPP failed to do so. A large number of people hailing from different walks of life, including women and students, took part in the demonstration to protest against the statement of the provincial education minister. On Thusday, Haq, while addressing a gathering of students at the Sindh Univeristy, stated that certain elements wanted to set up a varsity in specific areas of Hyderabad, but he would become an “iron wall” against their designs.
Dr Sattar said that the literacy rate in the country was very low and the senior education minister should have announced that many universities would be established in Sindh to fight ignorance. He stressed that the Haq’s statement had revealed the true face of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Dr Sattar said that when the MQM was a part of the ruling coalition, the Sindh People’s Local Government Act 2012 was being presented as the best possible step, but as the party left the coalition, the act became unacceptable, all of a sudden.
Speaking on the occasion, MQM Coordination Committee Member Waseem Aftab said that the intellectuals of Sindh should decide which political party had rendered sacrifices for the rights of the province.
“The PPP has claimed that the resources of Karachi belong to the whole of Sindh, but the party has done nothing for the progress of the city in the last five years,” he maintained.
Other members of the coordination committee, Ashfaq Mangi and Heer Soho, also spoke on the occasion.
