Among the nation-builders in the entire human history, Chairman Mao is one of the foremost and the greatest. A Chinese Communist revolutionary, guerrilla warfare strategist, political philosopher and leader of the Chinese Revolution, he was the architect and founding father of the People's Republic of China from its establishment in 1949.
Mao triumphed because his policies won the support of the peasantry and other groups. Land reform, education, and improved health care gave them good reason to support Mao. He offered a solution to China's fundamental social and economic problems. He solidified the great
Chinese people into one nation and held control over the nation until his death. His theoretical contribution to Marxism-Leninism, along with his military strategies and brand of policies, are collectively known as Maoism.
He commanded the Long March, forming a Second United Front with Nationalists during the Second Sino-Japanese War to defeat regional warlords and repel a Japanese invasion. He commanded the Communist Party to victory against Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang forces. After reunifying China through his Campaign to Suppress Counterrevolutionaries, he enacted land reform giving the land acquired into people's communes. His actions doubled the school population, provided universal housing, abolished unemployment and inflation, increased healthcare access, and dramatically raised life expectancy. It was China's 'Great Leap Forward'. His role as a theorist, statesman, poet, and visionary is still cherished in China.
"If we have shortcomings, we are not afraid to have them pointed out and criticized, because we serve the people. Anyone, no matter who, may point out our shortcomings. If he is right, we will correct them. If I what he proposes will benefit the people, we will act upon it."
Speech on September 8, 1944
