Recent failed operation in heart of city Karachi raised several questions in every mind. Only days ago government own minister accepted that city has more weapons than lawless tribal areas and some groups in city taking reward as a weapons to provide cover to NATO supply line. Despite one week long siege and lost of twenty seven lives security forces are still not able to clear Layari from gangsters and kill or capture any most wanted criminals. Lyari operation is started without any planning. Criminal elements of area are also gaining wide political support from different political parties.
Lyari is situated in heart of Karachi thick and narrow roads not allowed armored police vehicles to move freely. Cost of Layari operation is very high due to closure of all main markets in the area Country also lost millions of rupees revenue . All schools and education centers are remain closed and government has already postponed matriculation examination papers. Due to heavy fighting Lyari 1.5 million population had besieged in their homes and spend one week without electricity, water and sanitation facilities. Due to continues firing several families migrated to other areas of city. Police also lost their five personnel’s, several armored vehicles and their reputation also. Although interior minister Rehman Malik linked all events to Taliban and gang war elements but true reality is that Peoples Peace committee who is main accuse of unrest in Layari is government own supported people .
Layari is a strong hold of Pakistan ruling parity PPP and last forty years no political parity is able to defeat any PPP candidate. Despite their trust and willingness Layari is still considers poorest area of city. Several aid packages announced by present government could not change fortunes of Layari people. Unemployment is very high and due to economic difficulties and raising price of basic commodities poor people find it hard to provide daily necessities of lives to their families. Now Layari is growing place for drug mafia groups some are working under government protection and have linked with key ministers. Due to unemployment youths of Layari have become prime target of these mafia groups and mafia groups have large number of force to counter police operations like this.
